Wainuiomata Primary and Intermediate students are not only benefiting from full stomachs but also from new sports equipment, courtesy of their local Pita Pit. As part of the Ministry of Education’s Ka Ora Ka Ako Healthy School Lunches programme, these Wellington schools are among others in the region enjoying over 33,800 lunches provided by Pita Pit this year, contributing to the 113,000 lunches prepared for Wellington children in the first two terms of 2023. Beyond nourishment, Pita Pit, in collaboration with the Tania Dalton Foundation, is distributing 1,200 sports balls to schools across New Zealand, aiming to promote healthy eating and active, device-free play among Kiwi kids. Duane Dalton, Pita Pit New Zealand CEO and chair of the Tania Dalton Foundation, emphasises the importance of healthy choices and physical activity for children’s focus, success in school, and future well-being. The initiative, which began in 2019 and expanded after a successful 2020 pilot, seeks to eliminate food insecurity and the stigma associated with free lunch programmes through nutritious, government guideline-compliant meals. With a commitment to sustainability and reducing landfill waste, Pita Pit encourages schools in need to engage with the programme, offering support in menu planning and logistics to ensure every child has access to healthy lunches and the opportunity for active play.
